FAQ
What is the Bowen Technique? The Bowen Technique is a non-invasive, soft tissue remedial therapy - a gentle form of bodywork which involves the therapist using fingers or thumbs in various parts of the body to move over muscle, tendon, ligament and fascia. Bowen treats the whole person not just the part or parts of the body in which symptoms occur and its practitioners will not make medical diagnoses. They use a process of visual assessment and physical or energetic palpation of tissue tension and energetic blocks to guide treatment. Where does the Bowen Technique come from?Bowen Therapy was developed in the 1950's, by an Australian man named Thomas Bowen who lived in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. He had a great interest in massage and bodywork and spent time observing football trainers and others involved with sports. During his interest in ways to alleviate human suffering he began to notice that certain moves on the body had particular effects. He claimed that he could sense minute vibrations in the soft tissues of the body and that the tension in the muscles helped him find the precise places to mobilize. More importantly, he innately knew how to treat and what was required, by looking and touching the person's body. Thus, allowing the right space and balance within the body to heal itself. Over a period of several years he developed the system as it is used today. By the time he was in his early 40's he had established a full time practice in remedial therapy using the techniques that he had developed now known as 'The Bowen Technique'. It is never necessary to completely undress and dignity will be maintained at all times. Treatments are usually scheduled around one week apart and three treatments are recommended in order to establish whether the client is likely to respond. Most people will have a response within 3 - 4 sessions; other conditions might need to be treated more often. Will the therapist consult me about my condition and gain my consent prior to a session? At the beginning of each session I ask the client questions to enable me to ascertain the best form of treatment for their problems. I then explain what I plan to do and ask the client to sign a form to ensure that we are both happy with the plan of action. What will happen when I see a Bowen therapist?During a treatment, which consists of a series of gentle moves directly onto skin or through light clothing, dependant on what the client is comfortable with. The client will usually lie on a therapy table, although the work can be carried out with the client sitting on a chair. A feature of the Bowen technique is that the therapist will leave the room between sets of moves to allow the client to rest, allowing the body the opportunity to respond to the moves given. It is common for areas not being directly treated to respond to the treatment. As a general rule, moves will be made over the lower and mid back and legs, the upper back and shoulders before ending the session, with the client lying face up, and finish off with neck moves. How soon after each treatment can I be active?I provide post treatment advice following your session as to what is appropriate for you; however it is acceptable to return to work following Bowen and important to remain as mobile as possible to facilitate the therapy. How much is the treatment? The standard cost for a Simply Bowen session lasting up to 60 minutes is £35. However there are offers which can be seen on the Simply Bowen website section under prices. What is happening to your body after your treatment? The moves in a Bowen treatment penetrate to a deep cellular level, incorporating the body's unique ability to heal itself. With the release of tension and toxins the moves begin to accomplish a balance of energy almost immediately. Bowen starts a shift of energy and can typically take up to three days to rebalance the body. Since Bowen addresses the body as a whole unit rather than just the presenting symptoms, it embraces the physical, chemical, emotional and mental aspects of each person receiving Bowen. Are there any side effects following treatment?Reactions to treatment are not uncommon and can include tiredness, increase in original symptoms, stiffness, headaches, flu like symptoms, increased dream activity. Advice given after a session will emphasise the importance of gentle movement and drinking plenty of water. Will the therapist contact my GP following treatment? All client and treatment details are held in the strictest confidence and Simply Bowen will not disclose information to any third party. However, as an additional service I am happy, should you request, to write to your GP or other health care practitioners explaining the treatment that you have received and any advice that I have provided. By keeping all relevant health care practitioners informed about your treatments this can help ensure a holistic return to health.
